A total-art stage fusing “tradition and the contemporary,” held on Monday, November 9, 2020, at the Kanze Noh Theatre in GINZA SIX, co-starring JUNKO KOSHINO and Kiyokazu Kanze, the 26th Grand Master of the Kanze School. The first part was “Fujin Raijin” performed by Kanze-school Noh actor Michiharu Wakebayashi, together with a fashion show by JUNKO KOSHINO expressing the Japanese sense of beauty. Carrying forward the worldview of Noh that begins with the gods of wind and thunder, the ethereal projection mapping cast across the Kanze Noh Theatre guided the audience into the fashion show. The models’ quiet sliding steps, evoking the movements of Noh, created a singular atmosphere in time with the hayashi music. At the close of the show, Saburota Kanze made a special appearance; alongside his powerful dance, threads of a spider’s web were cast forth. In the second part, Kiyokazu Kanze, the 26th Grand Master of the Kanze School, performed the Noh “Momijigari: Onizoroe,” featuring the nochi-shite (lead role) costume and mountain of autumn leaves designed by JUNKO KOSHINO. The fabric of the shite’s demon costume used a special textile woven by Hosoo in Kyoto, expressing the dread of the demon through a weighty, profound aesthetic.
